From the 29th of September to the 20th of October 2022, the European Foundation for Support of Culture will organize a tour of eight concerts by Maltese world-renowned tenor, Joseph Calleja, in Eurasia.
Two of the events will take place in Kazakhstan: at the State Opera and Ballet Theatre Astana Opera with the Astana Opera Orchestra in Nur-Sultan and at the Abay Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, with the Abay Opera House Orchestra in Almaty.
One of the concerts will happen in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), with the Symphony Orchestra of the The Navoi Theater at the Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theater.
The other concerts will take place in Armenia, at the Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, named after Alexander Spendiaryan, with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra (ASSO). Moreover, in Georgia with the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Symphony Orchestra of the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet. Finally, the final performances will be in Poland, at some of the country’s best venues with world-renowned orchestras and other famed venues around the region.
Joseph Calleja has performed on the best stages worldwide with his very broad repertoire: the Köln Philharmonie and Konzerthaus Dortmund, Open-Air Gala in front of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Chicago Lyric Opera, Verdi’s Luisa Miller and Vienna State Opera. On the concert stage, Joseph Calleja had solo concerts at the renowned festival in Peralada, Spain, followed by opera galas in Puerto Rico and at the Baden-Baden festival hall. A Grammy-nominated recording artist for Decca Classics, he has released five solo albums for the label.
Conductor of the tour will be Sergey Smbatyan, who is acclaimed as a cultural leader in his native Armenia and increasingly in demand on the international stage. Sergey Smbatyan is founder, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the ASSO and, in September 2019, he became Principal Conductor of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO).
